In 1928 Orin Overton, the inventor of the roller bearing bicycle pedal had already been killed in a tragic motorcycle accident in Mobile, Alabama. A teenage boy learning to drive lost control and ran my grandfather down while he was sitting still on a 4-cylinder Indian motorcycle, on the sidewalk, in front of his motorcycle shop.

I credit this disaster for my compulsion to make some improvement in the bicycle.
